MoveOn Council Leadership Roles

MoveOn Councils are entirely member- led. Every MoveOn Council has the following leadership roles (basic descriptions for each role below):

  • Council Coordinator: the local organizer for the Council
  • Core Group: the core members of the Council, who work together to grow the Council and run the campaign
  • Council members: all local MoveOn members to commit to working together locally and participate in events

COUNCIL COORDINATOR

The Council Coordinator has three main responsibilities: Council development, recruitment, and event organizing.

Council Development: Your number-one job is to build your council. There are two main parts of this:

  • Build Community: You want to look for the best opportunities to build relationships within your council, to help people get used to working together and be friends. A strong community is the best way to build a lasting council.
  • Develop new leaders- Your job is to constantly be asking new folks to take on big roles and to get involved, and to help the folks who are involved stay active.

Recruitment: One of your main jobs is to make sure that you and your council are actively and aggressively thinking about recruitment.

  • This means both recruiting new MoveOn members to come to your events.
  • Asking new folks to join your council.

Event organizing: Council's Successful Participation in MoveOn Campaigns.

  • As coordinator, it's your job to make sure some folks from your council are running each and every event.
  • This shouldn't be you every time, but it is your job to make sure someone is doing it, and to support them in their work.


CORE GROUP ROLES

Each Council has a core group-- members who are the leadership team for the Council's work--and each core group member commits to making sure that the Council is growing, developing, and successfully running MoveOn campaigns locally.

Core group members are not an event planners-- but rather are local organizers taking on responsibilities to run local campaigns and expand the Council membership.

Primarily deals with recruiting new folks to our councils, and keeping in touch with existing members. Similarly, a coordinator should build a team to work with them, and can constantly involve new folks by asking them to make outreach calls.

Media Coordinator and Team: (click here for the full job description)

Responsible for earning media coverage, maintaining a media list, and thinking about how to constantly reach out to more media. A coordinator should build a team to work with them.
